Let’s talk about peer review

Do you have a story to tell about your experience with gatekeeping in journal peer review?

I am recruiting participants for my doctoral research in the Institute of Feminist & Gender Studies at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Michael Orsini supervises me.

Are you:

  • A woman, non-binary, intersex, genderfluid, Two-Spirit

  • Published (or have attempted to publish) in health sciences or social sciences journals

  • A first-author or lead author

  • Comfortable communicating in English

I am particularly interested in speaking to disabled scholars, LGBTQQ2SIA+ scholars, BIPOC scholars, first-generation scholars, and scholars from the global south.

The study focuses on how women, non-binary, Two-Spirit, genderqueer, and genderfluid scholars navigate journal peer review processes and if and how journal peer review may contribute to experiences of exclusion within and beyond the academy. I would like to interview people with experience as first-authors, submitting to journals in the fields of health science or social sciences. I plan to examine the role of social location, such as disability, gender, race, nationality, and sexuality and experiences of scholars publishing their research in peer reviewed journals. I aim to critique established systems of knowledge production in general and journal peer review specifically.

What does it involve?

  • A short demographic questionnaire (about 15 questions) and a remote, one-on-one semi-structured interview that will take approximately 60 minutes of your time.

Accessibility: The remote interview can take place on a platform of your choice (Zoom, Skype, phone, webchat, etc.). If you have any accessibility requirements, please let me know.

During the interview, you will be asked questions such as: what did you know about peer review experience before you submitted your first journal article? With your permission, I would audio or video-record the interview (depending on the platform) to ensure accurate transcription and analysis.
